Apple may open up Fairplay DRM to accessory makers

Submitted by jordan57 on Wed, 2007-01-17 10:34. :: | |

The iPod maker is expected to make two announcements this week - the first will be to allow streaming of protected AAC content via USB; the second will be to licence its Fairplay DRM to the company's Made For iPod licencees.

This will have the effect of enabling you to play songs bought from the iTunes Store through third party devices like hi-fis using digital connections. It may also mean that devices like iPod docks will be able to display more information - artwork and other track info, for example - which is stored alongside the protected audio. Tech.co.uk

How Apple kept its iPhone secrets

Submitted by jordan57 on Wed, 2007-01-10 12:22. :: |

Apple, legendary for the ferocity with which it safeguards new product announcements, had extraordinary challenges in keeping the iPhone under wraps for 30 months. Besides involving Cingular, Google and Yahoo, not to mention the unnamed Asian manufacturer, the project touched nearly every department within Apple itself, Jobs said, more so than in any previous Apple creation.

No one thinks Apple went to the draconian lengths of some rivals, like Hewlett-Packard, which bugged phones, read e-mail, riffled through trash and otherwise spied on board members, employees and journalists in order to track down leaks of confidential company information. However, Apple does make it clear to employees and business partners that they will be dismissed and possibly prosecuted for leaking company secrets. Apple has also played the bully role, suing bloggers and other independent journalists for posting purported advance information about unannounced Apple products.

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, said it too is considering a mobile phone integrated with its Zune digital music player, but launching such a device is not at top of its priority list.

Microsoft launched its Zune portable music player in November and set a sales target of more than one million units by the end of June. It is the first Microsoft-designed device in a market dominated by Apple, which has sold more than 70 million iPods since it was launched in October 2001.

Will Jobs unveil the iPhone tomorrow

Even with the consumer product frenzy peaking at CES in Las Vegas, the tech world is  awaiting Steve Jobs' next big magic trick. Will he or won't he produce an Apple cell phone–not an iPhone because that name is taken, but perhaps something called the iPod Phone or iPod C or iPod X or whatever. More important than the name it must eliminate all the well known problems and complexities of the current breed of cellular devices that numbers more than a billion.

Studios OK technology for movie downloads

Submitted by jordan57 on Thu, 2007-01-04 11:42. ::

 Hollywood studios have approved a new technology and licensing arrangement that should remove a major obstacle consumers now face with burning movies they buy digitally over the Internet onto a DVD that will play everywhere.

Sonic Solutions Inc. is introducing on Thursday the Qflix system for adding a standard digital lock to DVDs burned in a computer or a retail kiosk.

The lock, known as "content scrambling system," or CSS, is backed by the studios, TV networks and other content creators and comes standard on prerecorded DVDs today. All DVD players come equipped with a key that fits the lock and allows for playback.

But movie download services such as Movielink, CinemaNow and Amazon.com's Unbox haven't been able to use CSS because studios fear widespread DVD burning could lead to piracy.

Studios have experimented with an alternative to CSS used by movie downloading service CinemaNow, but only a small number of titles are available for such burning and some users have complained of problems with playback.

If you're among the scores of Americans who overindulged this holiday season (and even if you didn't), there's a good chance you're kicking off the New Year with a vow to get in better shape. In the interest of helping readers stick to such resolutions, we're starting a series of reviews of high-tech fitness gear, beginning with a look at the $29 Nike + iPod Sport Kit.

I have typically regarded running as an almost equipment-free exercise—in contrast to, say, gear-intensive sports such as biking or backpacking. A decent pair of shoes and a pair of sweats make up the basics, whether you're Marion Jones or, like me, just trying to keep your post-college gut in check. Yahoo

Small Number of Video iPods Shipped With Windows Virus

Submitted by jordan57 on Tue, 2006-10-17 13:32. :: |

We recently discovered that a small number - less than 1% - of the Video iPods available for purchase after September 12, 2006 left our contract manufacturer carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it. So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it. Apple Page
